It is rare that I get to create a visual identity for a brand that feels almost personal. It’s like creating something that I would have made for myself but using someone else’s language to tell the story. This was originally made for the entrance tunnel to a dispensary in Northern California. It ultimately won a Cannabis Clio that year (the only illustration specific design to win an award). It was so successful that it now appears in dispensaries across Southern California.

The central Spade from the History of Heavy Hitters Mural ultimately became the design motif for the brand’s premium Live Rosin products. The design symbolizes the elaborate process of making this high end solvent less cannabis product.

This is the second mural I have created for Heavy Hitters. It is all about representing the brand’s history in tiny details; the mammoth is the landscape and represents the parent company, terpenes grow on the roof of the house where early roots lived and grew, the dog that hung out and loved to chase coyotes, the tattoo artist who designed their logo, and so on. It is a visual adventure to look through this.

We set out to create a few designs for some swag items. I wanted to create designs that were true to the brand and their gorgeous packaging but that did not rely on gradients, using only solid colors to make printing less complex. We ended up with a shirt and a tote bag that everyone is excited to wear around town.

I love doing portraits, and I especially love it when I get to do portraits of the parents of business owners to help develop their brand into something really special. Thanks to the team at Green Street, I got to illustrate this portrait for Dr. Norm's medicinal edibles, creating something modern with a vintage twist. I also got to do an illustration of Dr. Norm in the likeness of Uncle Sam for the company's trade show posters, which was a unique and delightful challenge.

When I was asked by Green Street to create some cannabis emoji illustrations, I felt like I had just reached a whole new level of illustrative awesomeness! I am so proud to have worked on these, and I learned just how much design potential this market has as the product becomes more legalized. Such a fun job!
